Bae Sung-Han
Abstract
For the purpose to find meaning of weight loss in respect of prognostic value in pastric cancer we carried out retrospective analysis of 273 gastric cancer patients for the period of 3 years starting January of 1988 to December of 1990. There
were
396
gastric cancer patients during the period in Korea University Hospital 123 patients were excluded due to lack of precise information of weight loss.
The patients were allocated into 5 groups according to weight loss. The group 1 consists of 146 patients who had loss of weight between 0~5%. The group 2 consists of 60 patients who had loss of weight between 5~10%. The group 3 consists of 28
patients
who had loss of weight between 10%~15%. The group 4 consists of 39 patients who had loss of weight over 15%.
The group 4 patients has low incidence of antral cancer compare with group 1(59.0% vs 79.4%).There are T2 34.9%, T3 39.7%, T4 25.4% in group 1 compare with 12.8%, 33.3%, 53.9% respectably in group 4. There are 67.2% of No and N1 in group 1
compare
with
69.2% in group 4. But ratio is reverse in stage IV. That is 23.3% compare 56.4%. There are 74.7% of curative resection in group 1 compare with 48.7% in group 4. The complication rate was double in group 4 compare with group 1. In conclusion, in
group 4
there were high incidence of advance cancer such as T4 and N3, low rate of curative resection and high incidence of complications rate.
The preoperative weight loss may be one of indicatior to predicting prognosis of gastric cancer
